My oldest son is in preschool. I LOVE getting to be involved with his class. I look for any reason I can come up with to be able to be a part of his preschool experience. My latest scheme was helping the kids decorate gingerbread men for the holidays. His teacher agreed to me bringing in some cookies and icing for each child. Now a normal person would do just that, not I. Since there are only 9 kids in his class, I made each of them a Gingerbread Man Decorating Kit!
I used Gingerbread 101 recipe from The Food Network. It is just perfect for the kids because it is a mild gingerbread, and slightly soft. If you are looking for a gingerbread with a hot spicy bite, and complex flavor, this is not the recipe for you. My 18 month old LOVED these.
I made enough gingerbread men for each child to have two. One to eat then and one to take home as a gift. I put them both in a cello bag and sealed it with a little piece of clear tape. (The bag will be reused.) Also in the kit I put a disposable pastry bag with white royal icing, little bags filled with M&M’s, Red Hots, and Mini Chocolate Chips, and a gift tag. After they decorate the second cookie they can put it back in the cello bag and attach the gift tag. I then put everything in a brown lunch sac and attached decorating directions and a picture of a gingerbread man with each child’s name printed on it.
